About Pam Proctor

Pam Proctor’s academic background and professional writing experience set the stage for the development of her college admissions program as founder/president of College Application Consultants.

A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, she earned a master’s degree in government from Claremont Graduate University and wrote a thesis on the reversion of Okinawa to Japan. With her sights set on a career in journalism, Pam first worked in Tokyo for Japan’s public radio station, NHK, where she wrote and recorded English-language feature stories on Japanese life for broadcast throughout Asia.

Back home in New York City, she landed jobs in public relations, followed by a six-year stint at Parade magazine, where she traveled the country writing human-interest stories and rose to the position of Senior Editor. Turning freelance, she continued writing for Parade and plunged into a career as a nonfiction book writer for such publishers as Warner Books, Doubleday, and Simon and Schuster. She now boasts 10 books to her credit as co-author, ghostwriter, or author.

Author of The College Hook

In her latest book, The College Hook: Packaging Yourself to Win the College Admissions Game, Pam uses her know-how as a writer and her track record as an independent college consultant to share the creative secrets that can help students “sell” themselves to colleges through their applications.
The book includes stories of real students who, guided by Pam, realized their dreams by gaining admission to schools in the Ivy League and Little Ivies, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Emory, Northwestern, Boston College, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Washington and Lee, and USC, to name a few.

Independent College Consultant

As an independent college consultant for more than 20 years, Pam has worked with public and private school students from across the U.S. and around the world. Students have been enrolled in AP, International Baccalaureate (IB), British A Level, and French Baccalauréat programs. For 16 years, she served as a consultant to the IB program at Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Florida.

A popular speaker on the “how-tos” of college admission, Pam has shared her tips with AP and IB parent and student groups; high school students from the United Arab Emirates; and first-generation, underserved minority students in Florida and Massachusetts. She’s also led professional workshops on The College Hook for high school and independent college counselors at annual conventions of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC), and the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA).

Media Expert

An often-quoted expert on college admissions, Pam has been cited in many leading publications, including The New York Times, USA Today, U.S. News and World Report: America’s Best Colleges, and Newsweek: How to Get Into College. On the air, she’s been featured worldwide on a webcast sponsored by Unigo, The Wall Street Journal, and Aristotle Circle, as well as on local radio and TV shows.

Teen Writers Workshop Founder

Never content just to talk about college admission, Pam also paved the way for young writers to build a writing hook for their college applications. In 2000, Pam co-founded the Teen Writers Workshop with writer/realtor Charlotte Terry under the sponsorship of the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation. The workshops are still going strong in a virtual format. Pam holds memberships in the National Association for College Admission Counseling and the Overseas Press Club of America.

SAT/ACT/PSAT Prep

Partnering with Pam in College Application Consultants is her husband, Bill Proctor, who serves as the organization’s vice president. A graduate of Harvard College (magna cum laude in American History) and Harvard Law School, Bill handles the tutoring arm of the company, prepping students one-on-one for the SAT, ACT, and PSAT. Bill, a journalist and former head of the Criminal Courts Bureau of the New York Daily News, has written more than 90 nonfiction and fiction books as co-author, ghostwriter, and author. His books, including several international bestsellers, have sold more than 20 million copies.
